A new computer system is being introduced in Wales to help health and social care professionals work together to provide care closer to people’s homes. The Welsh Community Care Information System (WCCIS) is an electronic information-sharing platform designed to deliver improved care and support for people across Wales.
The system will give community nurses, mental health teams, social workers and therapists the digital tools they need to work better together and quickly and securely share information to co-ordinate and deliver services and support for individuals, families and communities. When fully implemented across the West Glamorgan region (and more widely across Wales) it will overcome the obstacles posed when organisations use different IT systems by securely storing important information covering a range of practices such as community nursing, health and social care visits, mental health, learning disabilities, substance misuse, complex care needs or social care therapy.
A regional digital and technology strategy will underpin the implementation of the WCCIS across the West Glamorgan region, to ensure that professionals can access and utilise information remotely within the community. It will ensure the relevant tools are available and effective, and support to maintain and operate these is efficient and joined up across the region. The strategy will also seek to best support staff and community members to adapt to new, modern and innovative ways of working.
